The reviews speak volumes about the enchanting dining experience at DZ Akin's. Customers rave about the latkes served during Hanukkah, a culinary delight that transports you straight to a bygone era. Vicki F. echoes this sentiment, describing DZ Akin's as a treasure of nostalgia. It's a place where you can indulge in a mish mash of flavors, featuring a combination of latkes, blintzes, kreplach, and pierogi all in one heavenly dish. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with the staff—many of whom seem to have been there forever—providing service that's as comforting as a home-cooked meal.
If you're looking to satisfy a sweet tooth, the bakery does not disappoint. Think of classics like the black-and-white cookie, often hailed as a New York staple. Finally tried this place after a friend brought a box of cookies. I only tried the bakery and got the same cookies I enjoy - the small chocolate chip and raspberry - don't know what they're called but they're delicious, especially with coffee. I would say it's a bit pricey since they charge by the pound but it is what it is, especially with these prices nowadays.
Overall great service, waiters were super nice. The food was good, and it wasn't chaotic like most restaurants.
When in San Diego and craving latkes at Hanukkah, allow me to suggest this treasure. From the on site gift shop (yes) to the deli and bakery counters (indeed) to the wait staff that appear to be original, you have stepped back in time. And allow me to state that the food is nothing short of 70's deli nostalgia, so hard to find these days. A menu that must have a thousand items, pickles on the table, your every desired combo including a "mish mash" that has latkes, blintzes, kreplach and pierogi. Did I go for a bowl of cold borscht? You bet I did.
I went to DZ Akins today for dessert. I thought the black and white cookies was a ny thing but was surprised to see it here. I don't know if we got bigger or their desserts got smaller but I remember 6 adults not being able to finish a sundae. It took 2 adults and a teen and there was no struggle.
DZ Akins - Where Cravings Meet Their Match Walking into DZ Akins, you're greeted by the sweets counter, which, let's be honest, is where I mentally bookmarked my exit strategy (because who doesn't want to leave with treats?). But before I could even think about dessert, we were warmly greeted by Jennifer, who was hands-down the best server we've had in ages. Seriously, if you're lucky enough to get Jennifer, your day is about to get brighter! Now, I came with a craving for mish mash soup (that glorious bowl of matzo ball goodness with noodles and dumplings), and DZ Akins delivered! The broth was rich, and both the matzo ball and dumpling were perfectly seasoned. It was like a hug in a bowl. For the main event, we ordered the #12 pastrami and brisket with jack cheese and the #77 brisket on rye. Both sandwiches hit the spot. Pro tip: go for the coleslaw on the side! While the mac salad and potato salad were tasty, they leaned a bit sweet for my preference--I'm more of a savory side kind of person. Finally, with a full belly, I couldn't leave without circling back to that sweets counter. Grabbed a couple of treats for the road because, well, why not? Will I be back? Yep! Got my eye on the chicken and waffles as well and the chicken fried steak :) Welp, onto the next!
The MishMash Matzoh Ball Soup, Corned Beef Reuben on Rye, Potato Salad, Chocolate Cream Soda, and so much more always goes well at DZ Akins. Soivice is always fantastic and special. Oy Vay, did I just write this? I did and it's true. Service, food, ambiance is GREAT! Pssst.... The delicious deli sections are fresh, and the bakery goods are too! DZ Akins is the best on the South West of California!!!
